So I managed to stay awake for Game 7 of the World Series on Saturday night / Sunday Morning.. Or something like that.
So the game started at 0100 (YOU see what I did there???) Sunday morning. and I managed to stay awake for the most part, taking two "naps" throughout the game. Of course the game went into extra innings as these things do, and I assume that the Universe has / had decided that I would not sleep well. Shout out to Fox Sports.
Anyway, at the start of the playoff, I was undecided to to root for or against. The Orioles fell apart early in the season, which wasn't entirely unexpected; so I was at a bit of a loss.
I mean there were the usual suspects; the Phillies and Seattle were obvious teams to root for. The Yankees and Red Sox were obvious teams to root against. But as the playoffs progressed, and we got closer the the WS and Championship Series, things started crystalizing a little (emphasis on little).
As we got to the World Series, this is where things started to get complicated. As a lifelong Orioles fan, I couldn't root for the Blue Jays (Google Mike Mussina and Cito Gaston for an explanation). So I rooted for the Dodgers, for no other reason than Haterade.. And let's been honest as sports fans, none of this is unreasonable.
I continued to roots for the Dodgers (or was it against the Blue Jays, and is there a difference)?
The I started thinking during game 7 (I know waiting til the last minute), "Should I 1) be rooting for the U.S. team, 2) should I even care and 3) does it even matter?"
So let's break it down.... 1) I am a ex-pat, and don't really care about U.S. sports (unless its the Orioles or Ravens, because reasons) 2) Arsenal won this week and this weekend, so that makes me happy, 3) the Ravens won the last two weeks (this makes me happy) ( side story for another time about Ravens), 4) California is a Blue State (learned a new term this week for a "Grey State"), and LA is a Blue City so there is that.....
But should my politics impact my sports teams? No, but then again the teams that I roots for / against shouldn't be impacted by a decision that I had nothing to do with made by people I will never meet that occurred 32 years ago ( I mean am I really this petty).
Apparently the answer to both questions is yes, yes, and this is where we are.....
