Happy Semana Santa 2026 from Sevilla.

So apparently Sevilla does Semana Santa better than anyone else does. Apparently the origins of the Sevillian Semana Santa date back to the 1350s.   There are approximately 100 or so Hermandades (Brotherhoods) in Sevilla, and 71 participate in processing from their church to the Cathedral.

The interesting thing is that the Hermandades process to the Cathedral dressed in a capirote; which is pointed hat. The capirote is worn, so that the member of the Brotherhood can repent for their sins in anonymity.  The schedule of which Brotherhoods process to the Cathedral is the same from year to year.

So on Holy Thursday; Los Negritos is the first Brotherhood to process to the Cathedral.  The Los Negritos Brotherhood has apparently 800 members and it took about an hour for the members, two floats (Pasos), and marching band, an a cappella choir to pass by.

The Los Negritos Hermandades is one of the oldest Brotherhoods and was established prior to 1400.   They were established to provide support and care to the freed slaves of Sevilla.

So the Ku Klux Klan stole the idea of the idea of the capirote for reasons I do not quite understand.

Now, the funny thing is that “black face” is a thing during Three Kings Day in January. Now that’s something to get offended by…. But that’s another story….
