So now that I am in Spain, I assume I have to choose a Football team. Oddly enough, Sevilla has two teams, Sevilla and Real Betis.
When I first arrived, T noticed more Sevilla jerseys out and about, but I kept seeing these green jerseys and I was like, there’s something here.
So as I noted earlier, Sevilla is the red team and Real Betis is the green team. So as I do, I started going down rabbit holes to see which team I would support, because no true sports fan can support two teams (my opinion).
I visited both stadiums; Sevilla’s stadium is located in Nervion, where I currently live (though I did know that at the time.) The Real Betis stadium in located in another part of the city. The Real Betis stadium is currently under construction, so they are playing at the La Cartuja, which was built for the proposals for the 2004 and 2008 Olympics. Apparently neither team wanted La Cartuja for their home stadium, so its generally unused, though both teams use the stadium when they are renovating their home stadiums.
Now back to choosing. So I did some online searchers and I think generally the Real Betis fans are more blue collar / working class (Is that even a thing in Spain) and the Sevilla fan base is more white collar (again, is this even a thing?). I asked my ex pat friends who to support and didn’t really get a good answer.
Also, since I am not in either Barcelona or Madrid, I cannot support either of those two teams, because they are the obvious choices and too popular. Apparently, their twice yearly meeting is known as El Gran Derbi.
So when I was signing my apartment lease, I asked the apartment’s owner who I should support and she said with such certainty that I am a Sevilla fan. And honestly, I am ok with that. So unless something major changes my mind, I am a supporter of Sevilla FC.
Now, next question, whose jersey do I get? So many questions.
